When was the Bronze age?
The
Bronze Age occurred in Europe starting around 2200 to
approximately 700 BC. The Bronze overlapped the Iron
age by a few hundred years.
Why has the art of Bronze Casting
remained relatively unchanged
for so long?
A bronze
caster had to mine his own copper
and tin ore using stone tools. Remove the impurities. Then
through trial and error, come up with the proper ratio of
tin to copper to produce bronze.
How
did cast the shapes they wanted? Such as swords, spear
tips or daggers?
They
had to fashion their own molds. Early molds were made from
hand carved stone.
Why
was Bronze so popular?
Because
of it's strength.
What
is the ratio of tin to copper to produce Bronze?
Bronze is an alloy made primarily of copper and tin. It
may contain as much as 25 % tin. Bronzes with 10 %
or more tin are harder, stronger, and resistant to
corrosion.
Why
does bronze turn colors when it ages?
As bronze weathers, a brown or green film forms on the
surface. This film inhibits corrosion.
